The series of 9 sculptures were created over the last year: a year of tremendous upheaval, isolation, solitude, grief, reckoning and, to those who were fortunate enough to get there, grace.
In March, as the shutdown was announced, I decided to use this peculiar luxury of time to work on techniques I hadn’t done before. My metier, and what I have been known for, is my sculptural beadwork. Painting seemed daunting, but here I was with time on my hands and no excuse.
Each piece made was an individual sculpture noting where my emotional landscape was at the particular time. I never looked at the work as a series, but once the last piece was close to finished, I understood that the pieces formed a narrative that not only pointed to my personal place, but to where many were over the course of the year.
Here is my story of the Time Markers.
